
Years ago, I took a job at a company called Bowne Business Solutions which was later acquired by British based Williams Lea. Before the recruitment process, I’d never heard of Bowne. The company specialized in offering business support services for financial, legal and professional service firms which, simply put, means businesses hire them to manage portions of their internal functions that are critical to their business operations. This experience marked my introduction into the world of business process outsourcing.
What is Outsourcing?
Outsourcing is an agreement in which one company hires another company to be responsible for a planned or existing activity that is or could be done internally. Though the practice of outsourcing can be traced as far back as the second world war, the term outsourcing, which is derived from the phrase outside resourcing, originated in the early eighties. It often involves the contracting of a business process, operational and/or non-core functions. Some examples include creative and graphic design, business & administrative services, reception, mailroom & hospitality services as well as other non-core functions like facilities management and call center support.
